Both certifications sit in Microsoft's security stack, but they train different jobs: the SC-200 analyst detects and responds, the AZ-500 engineer designs and implements the security of Azure workloads.
Two different jobs in the same cloud
The SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst) lives in Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR: writing KQL, tuning analytics rules, triaging incidents, automating response. The AZ-500 (Azure Security Engineer) lives in Azure resources: identity and access, platform protection, security operations for infrastructure, and securing data and applications.
A simple test: if the task is 'find and stop the attacker', think SC-200; if it is 'design the network so the attacker has nothing to find', think AZ-500.
Format and difficulty
SC-200: about 40-60 questions in 100 minutes, heavily scenario and portal based, with KQL reading expected. AZ-500: typically 40-60 questions in 100 minutes too, but with a broader technical surface - Entra ID, network security, compute hardening, Key Vault, monitoring - that many candidates find the heavier lift.
Both use the 700/1000 scaled passing score and both renew annually through the free Microsoft online assessment, unlike CompTIA's CE cycle.
Which one, and in which order
SOC-track candidates should take SC-200 first; cloud infrastructure and DevSecOps engineers should start with AZ-500. If your goal is a Microsoft-centric security architect role, the common sequence is AZ-500 then SC-200 - or the reverse for analysts moving up.
They also stack well: SC-200 hunting skills make the AZ-500 monitoring domain easier, and vice versa, since both draw on Entra ID, logging and Microsoft's security products.
