Security+ Study Plan: SY0-701 in 60 to 90 Days
A week-by-week Security+ SY0-701 study plan aligned to the five official domain weights, with practice questions and mock exams.

The Security+ SY0-701 rewards candidates who rotate through the five domains repeatedly rather than reading one domain to exhaustion. This plan fits a full-time job and lands you ready in 60 to 90 days.
Weeks 1-2: General Security Concepts (12%)
Cover core concepts: the CIA triad, zero trust, change management, cryptographic basics and risk types. The domain is small (12% of the exam) but everything else builds on its vocabulary, so make it solid.
End every study day with a handful of practice questions - the free Security+ quiz on PassYour works well for this - and note the reasoning, not just the letter.
Weeks 3-4: Threats, Vulnerabilities and Mitigations (22%)
This is the biggest knowledge domain: attack types, malware families, vulnerability management and the mitigation landscape. Build a mental matrix that maps every attack to its primary control.
Expect scenario wording: the exam gives you a symptom and asks for the best next action, not the textbook definition.
Weeks 5-8: Architecture (18%) and Operations (28%)
Architecture covers cloud models, virtualization, enterprise infrastructure and data strategies; operations is the heaviest domain at 28% - hardening, baselines, identity, monitoring and incident response concepts. Give these four weeks combined.
Operations rewards hands-on thinking: if you have never read a log or triaged an alert, spend extra time on monitoring and identity topics.
Weeks 9-10: Security Program Management (20%) and mock exams
Governance, compliance, risk management math (ALE, SLE, ARO), third-party risk and awareness close the outline. The wording traps live here: appetite vs tolerance, due care vs due diligence.
Finish with two or three full-length timed mock exams, then drill your weakest domain. If you score above 80% consistently under time pressure, you are ready.
